About the Therapist

My name is Hameda Nyamekye (Nya-mih-che), a first generation Ghanaian- Canadian with a passion for serving and connecting with members of the global majority. I am a therapist, daughter of the diaspora and advocate for your well-being.

My Approach

I am committed to empowering you to reclaim your story, get back in touch with yourself and live in ways that align with your values. I practice from a relational, narrative and somatic-focused approach. This means that we pay attention to how stress shows up in your body as well as your thoughts. I incorporate therapeutic approaches that support you in navigating life’s challenges and work towards achieving your goals.

In our first few sessions, we won't dive right into the heavy stuff. We’ll spend time building a foundation of safety and exploring the stories you’ve been told versus the ones you want to write.

About Me

Born and raised in Toronto, my journey has also taken me through the landscapes of Hamilton, Calgary and Vancouver. As a child of immigrants, I am all too familiar with the demands of navigating multiple cultures, spaces and identities. My experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the communities I serve.

Outside of my work, you can find me with a warm drink in my hands, soaking up the sun and/ or getting lost in a good story or meal (preferably both).

About the Practice

Rooted in the meaning of Akoma (“heart” in Twi, an Akan dialect from Ghana) this practice honours your story and the depth of your entire identity. The term ‘Akoma’ reflects both my heritage and the somatic (body based) focus in my practice.

At Akoma Therapy and Wellness, we work on soothing the heart and reconnecting with the body, as much as we work on reframing or rewiring thought processes in the mind. Here, therapy encourages you to bring your mind and body together while honouring all of the parts that make you, you.

I started this practice because I saw a need for spaces where racialized individuals don't have to translate their culture before they begin their healing. I aim to provide culturally relevant, trauma-informed, affirming care to those who wish to see themselves reflected in their wellness journey.
